    Book details

A compassionate, spiritual work about soothing the sting of any kind of loss--a job change, the end of a friendship or of youth, or the death of a loved one. This thoughtful work focuses on the "spirituality of change". Sister Joyce Rupp offers topics for reflection and discussion, as well as specific prayers, to heal the hurts of everyday life and death.

The spirituality of change...Joyce Rupp has written a book about "these experiences of leaving behind and moving on, the stories of union and separation that are written in all our hearts. Praying Our Goodbyes, she says, is about the "spirituality of change." It is a book for anyone who has experienced loss, whether it be a job change, the end of a friendship, the death of a loved one, a financial struggle, a mid-life crisis or an extended illness. It is designed to help the reader recognize, ritualize, reflect on and reorient themselves. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

A friend recommended this book as I'd just retired. I found it an excellent help in dealing with the many "goodbyes" we face in life - not just the death of a loved one. There's quite a long section at the end with 2-3 pages each of meditation exercises and prayers for lots of different situation we may face where we need to say goodbye to an aspect of our lives. I have bought a couple more books, one for my pastor and one for a friend. Recommended.

This book was recommended to me by a friend as I'd just retired. This "career change" was my choice but was still a goodbye of a sort. Although I haven't yet finished working through the book I am finding it helpful as it deals with a whole range of goodbyes not just the loss occasioned by bereavement. It offers practical advice as to how to approach the inevitable goodbyes in our lives and to look ahead to the hellos to come. Recommended.

Having just left a country that was home for 6+ years, we have gone through some huge and painful goodbyes. I wish I had been able to read this before we left to prepare me for it, but I am still grateful for this a few weeks later rather than never. Well return and wonderfully comforting and great advice. Its a contemplative type book - not one to read through for quick tips and put aside but to be read, thought and prayed through before moving on to the next chapter.

This book was very helpful in thinking through the way loss and transition impacts people's lives, and gives many examples of how to minister to people in a variety of situations.

PRAYING OUR GOODBYES focuses on events that are common to man and common to human suffering.PRAYING OUR GOODBYES focuses on the harshness of life, and sticks to the main issues surrounding saying Goodbye, such as: death, change, struggle, pain, loss, loneliness etc.Sadly PRAYING OUR GOODBYES does not delight in the finer things in life that we maybe very reluctant to say Goodbye to, nor does it focus on the celebrations and the Goodness of life that arise from saying 'Welcome' to the new, and/or 'Goodbye' to the old, such as graduation, the birth of a new baby, baptisms and christenings, a new house or job or marriage proposals and weddings. There is No Index or detailed Contents Page so you cannot tailor your studies to suit your personal needs, however, PRAYING OUR GOODBYES 'Does' host many 'Guided' Prayers on relevant subjects and reminds us of the value of 'letting go', so that we can begin the healing proceses and 'move on', by saying/Praying Goodbye.Thank You!
